Should a chainsaw 4 stroke out of the wood?

well i do like to mod saws and such but the 441 i have is set ast rich as the limiters allow and its running like i want. now for why we want the saw to clean up during load. The extra fuel from what i understand is to help get the cylinder lubed so you dont over heat the motor and seize. now im sure someone other than myself will know better.

I use a tach to establish a baseline for the particular saw. IF you haven't had any problems all these years don't change what you are doing.

Good responses, and yes, it's best to er slightly rich than lean, in all cases.

What throws a monkey wrench into this deal is that some modern saws have rev-limiting coils and retard modules. These items can mimic the "four stroking" that we listen for at no load, and the untrained tuner can end up too lean with the "H" screw and possibly damage the engine.

How do I know if my saw has a rev limiter? New 290.

4-stroking with no load on the engine may mean that it's slightly rich,
but that's certainly better than it being lean.
Doing a plug chop will give you a bunch more info. if you want to get closer to perfect. Timed cuts have too many variables.

You can smoke a saw with C if you are not careful too.

When you get a tune make note of all settings and fuel mix used. If you change fuels retune and make another entry into the notes.

I may be wrong, but isn’t that where you run it maxed out then immediately kill the engine? Then pull the plug to see how it’s burning? Haven’t heard about that in years.

Plug chops are WAY overkill for saws imo. Knowing if you have a limited coil is more important. Rev liniter can br mistaken for four stroking. And i agree as above, for working, i prefer a good four stroke out of the cut that takes a little bit of load to clean up.

That’s how I have my saw and weed eater set up. 4 stroke burbling at WOT, then it smooths out under load.
