Located in the Hudson Valley- NY-We have a very large 75+ year oak tree in our front yard. It is dying at the top showing browned or no leaves in certain portions. In addition, a section of the lower bark is coming loose with carpenter ants, smaller ants and eggs living in the dead wet bark. I try to remove the dead bark as much as possible to prevent moisture collection and rot. What can I do to save this tree?

Looks like a Pin Oak. It's trying to compartmentalize the wound but the rot looks pretty bad. Was there damage there at some point?
I'm sure someone will chime in soon. If not, try to contact a certified arborist.
Just curious - what is the diameter or circumference? Pin Oak gets big quickly. One next door to me reached 24" dbh and about 50' tall in about 30 years.

it’s about 45” in diameter. The area under the bark in that spot was moist/ almost dirt like but I removed that recently in the dark section. Everything is still pretty hard. No physical damage I can recall.. unless lightning?
