Sick or Normal?

As you'll soon realize, my knowledge of hardwood trees is not well rounded. My questions are 1) what type of tree and 2) is this healthy/normal bark?

I think this is a sugar maple and it is healthy looking bark, but would like to confirm.

I should note that this tree is in Southeastern Minnesota.

Tree is infested with ants, the sapsucker holes are quite apparent. Does "appear" to be a maple, whether it is a hard maple or a box elder, we can't determine with these pics.

What makes you think the tree is "infested" with ants?

You're right, infested was a poor choice of words, there are two spots where woodpeckers have been working.
