He could also memorize a city phone directory overnight, but he needed his father around just to manage his life for him.
They should have hired an assistant to keep him maintained and happy on the job. I think he died around 50 years old; not terribly healthy, but unmatched on capacity to read & remember.

OMG! I can only imagine how difficult that would be to treat for bagworms (or any other pest). I can hear the call now:

Them: Dave, we'd like you to treat the maze for bagworms. Some of the bushes are infested.
Me: Really? How am I supposed to drag my hose into all the corners and spray everything?
Them: Don't worry, we'll give you a map. By the way, can you tell us what this will cost? We just had a budget cut, and the director said to keep the expenses way down.

Here is a question for the pro's in this thread: how would you make sure that everything got sprayed in that maze?

Lots of aerotractors to choose from:

    Google translates says:
"The airborne sled was a modified aircraft used in the Australian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) and the first aircraft to be brought to Antarctica.1 The expedition leader, Douglas Mawson, had planned to use a Vickers R.E.P. For reconnaissance, search and rescue, in addition to generating publicity, but this one crashed during a test flight in Adelaide, Australia, only two months before the date of departure. Even so, the plane was driven south with the expedition, after having removed the wings and metallic cover of the fuselage, transforming it into a sled trailer. The apparatus was first tested on November 15, 1912 and was useful in building wineries for sled groups in summer, but their use during the expedition was minimal.

After little operation, the icy conditions of Antarctica caused jams in the pistons and the apparatus was abandoned at Cape Denison in 1913. In 2008, a team from the Mawson's Huts Foundation began the search for the remains of the aerotractor, finding a chair 2009, and fragments of the ensemble later in 2010. After extensive research with sophisticated equipment, the results indicate that the aerotractor, or parts of it, is still buried under 3 meters of ice where it was abandoned."
