Upgraded splitters this spring to one of these. Haven’t used it much, but what I have, I’ve noted that it has a nasty tendency to push bits off of the beam directly into the grill around the muffler, those bits set there a little and become burning embers.

what have folks done to combat this? I’m thinking about a piece of sheet metal over the current muffler screen, but that’s going to direct a lot of heat back onto the motor.
Not my pic, but a splitter like mine for reference

Shape a metal cover for the beam. L shaped or curved as the beam. Make it to cover the beam from around the fuel tank cap to the Speeco decal. Epoxy the 6 magnets on the metal cover so they hold on to bottom of beam. This will direct the wood pieces to drop past the engine or on the opposite side. These are very strong magnets. They are difficult to pull off. But they slide off easily if you have to remove the cover. Five dollar fix. Worth a try. D788BC07-C080-4389-A777-9EE01674E10D.png

I like ETPilots idea, but without the magnets, you could use magnets. That guard traps debris. The reason for the heavier wire guard is for heavier protection. I would build a small deflector to funnel/direct the trash away from the muffler and use two bolts through the web of the beam. It shouldn't cause heat issues.
