stihl 034 upgrade

I have a Stihl 034 that needs a new top end and was wondering how to update it to a 036 cylinder mod. Anybody have part numbers I would need and/or any information that would help me out. I read a thread on this site about doing this mod but all I could come up with is that the 034 and the 036 have the same bore and strokes. Any info. will help.

I transformed my 034 into an 036 a couple years ago. All you need is a piston/cylinder kit and new gasket. I bought a new factory set from Ebay for <$100. You also need to modify the shroud because of the bigger block. A Dremel works fine and it's pretty easy to do.

I did not change carbs. My 034 carb. seems to supply the bigger block just fine.

I could be wrong but I think there are two 034's and I think the 034 Super already has the 036 block. Mine was a standard 034.

I think the upgrade was worth it.

Thanks for the info. I have been looking around for the 036 cylinder kit but it seems like the 034 and 036 are the same. Do they both have 48mm bore and 34mm stroke, and if so what is the difference between them? It would be great if you have a part number or anything to distinguish between them. I have the standard 034 and would love to get it running in the near future.

I was thinking the 034 was a 46mm bore ,and the 036 was a 48mm bore . I bet the 034 super was a 48mm bore same as 036. I could be wrong though.

Bore is 46mm for a std. 034. 036's have a bore of 48mm. (as do 034 Supers I believe). All 03X's have a stroke of 34mm.

For a conversion you need these 48mm parts:

1125 020 1204 1 Cylinder with piston Ø 48mm
1125 030 2001 1 Piston Ø 48mm
1125 034 3001 2 Piston ring Ø 48x1.2mm
1125 034 1500 1 Piston pin
9512 003 2340 1 Needle cage 10x14x13
1119 029 2301 1 Cylinder gasket 0.5mm

I think the price is a little high. I believe I bought mine for $99 but it was a Tecomec.

Couple of points from the above posts:

- the 034Super has the same bore as an 036, but a different cylinder. Go figure...

- You may need to change your muffler - early mufflers will protrude a few mm further. You can put spacers under the front screws but it looks odd. Also, the shroud plastic may need to be trimmed to stop it burning on the muffler.

- Davefr lists a new needle bearing above - the 034 is the same size and if in good shape will work fine.

So my question then is, Can I upgrade my 034 to the 034S/036 piston/cylinder? I have to replace my cylinder and piston on my 034AV, and if I can upgrade with a larger piston/cylinder kit I would like too.
