READ FIRST: Lets keep this thread respectful, civilized, and attempt to stay on track. We all like chainsaws here!!

I finally took some time to build myself a saw instead of for someone else. Picked this Magnum up locally over a year ago. It was a running cutting saw, just real ugly. I had plans right away to put some new parts on her and tore it down. Sadly that's as far as I got and into a box she went. Before I even bought the magnum I had been collecting NOS parts off ebay for sometime but once I got the magnum I decided to build it instead of the super I had.

Couple shots of when I brought the ol girl home

I started with checking port timing and here's what I got.
(This is without the base gasket)
EX: 102
TR: 120.5
IN: 73
BD: 18.5

Pretty good numbers I think.

Next I moved on to the machine work.

Here's my Logan lathe model 210 10x24. The fine members here on AS helped me pick out this lathe.

I took .050" off the squish band and set the squish to "020

Piston is nice and clean.

Prepping for porting

Here's the jug before I did any grind. I use the ring to set the timing, and a architectural ruler to draw the vertical lines.

Cool new magnetic base light I just got. Works great for this kind of work. I can never have enough light.

The final timing numbers ended up at
EX: 101.5
TR: 119-120.5 (I sloped them with intake side opening first)
IN: 80
BD: 17.5-19

Notice how they barely changed except the intake lowered from 74 to 80. The stock numbers were just fine but she neeeded more intake timing and there should be a big boost in compression with .050" coming off the band.

Now I moved to sorting out the rest of the saw. Like cleaning

Here's a bare NOS top cover I scored for cheap off ebay. I had a new tag made by custom chainsaw parts, and I installed that. I also had to rob parts off another cover I had to complete this. Notice this isn't the Magnum II. It's the first version of the magnum.

I recovered the bare full wrap with that top secret stuff

I dipped the muffler in vinegar for a few days to make cleaning up the rust easier. Nearly wipes off afterwards. One thing I don't like about these mufflers if they are difficult to customize. I like adding pipes to my mufflers but I just dont see that as an option here unless I wanted them pointed straight out at the wood and I don't..

Instead I cut the back of the deflector out so instead of gasses entering at the bottom, they can just flow right out. I'll also be gutting the inside of the muffler completely, cutting the dual pipe flush with the inside of the housing.

NOS gas tank and carb box. Had to buy these separate and put them together. Also did the fuel line, filter, carb studs, and choke lever

Here's a complete chain-brake assembly with a broken band. Just bought a new one from a member. Great to find someone here had that. Thanks again!

I will be swapping all these parts to the cover that came on the saw(it came bare). Not only is the original cover in better shape, it has the magnum style chip deflectors. (which I still need to find some rubber to make new ones)

Here's where she sits now. I have some new caber rings waiting in the mail box for me. Most everything else is ready to install. I'll do the muffler after work today, and the chain brake has been soaking in soapy water because it has prehistoric sawdust and sap stuck to it. I have a NOS pull starter assembly ready to install, new air filter box cover is also in the mail box, and I just ordered some custom falling spikes.

I got right to work on her as soon as I got home. Too excited not too.

Gutted the muffler

Cleaned the clutch cover up. On these old saws a shot of carb cleaner on a rag then wiping down painted parts really cleans up the paint. It’s just harsh enough it will take off a small amount of paint leaving fresh looking paint.

Ordered some frogzskin for the new intake cover.

Runs good. I feel like it would pull a 32” with authority. Rings need to seat still, should see some more gains from that.

I checked compression after running it with no bar yesterday and it was at 160. Just checked it again today after that little run time and it went up to 170. I would think it should climb a little higher still.

Just waiting on the custom spikes and new brake band to finish this bad girl up

I think these spikes are weird looking but I like the custom look they give.

Just waiting on the new brake band.

That saw sounds really nice . I'm impressed . Very good work on the porting. I did a complete rebuild on a 56 mag years ago but didn't do any modding because I was basically afraid of screwing up the new parts I bought for the saw .

I'm very happy with the saw. Nice to build a saw and keep it for once. I'm always selling off the goods ones.
