Hello,

I am hoping someone on here may be able to help me. I recently bought an old Stihl 066 red light that is missing a few parts. I have looked everywhere on the internet for parts for it and can't seem to find anything. Went to the local Stihl dealer and received the wrong parts diagram for my model and they seemed rather doubtful in finding parts for it. Is there anyone on here that might know of a place to get new/used parts for such an older model 066?

The saw has great compression, the case is tight and doesn't leak but it is missing the carburetor along with the filter base, filter, cover, etc. If pictures will help I can post those as well.

I have heard of the flywheel needing to be changed if the coil has been changed but not sure about the exact workings of that or how to tell if the flywheel that is currently on there, is correct.

If anyone can give me any kind of information on this saw or someplace to look that will help me get it running again I would be very appreciative. Thank you in advance!

I just want it to run and cut wood. I could care less about the red light but if it's a better and cheaper option, I'm open to anything...

Here is a link to the correct parts list.

"The red light 066 coil module was a Prufrex CDIC, Stihl PN: 1122 400 1307 (similar to the 064 module, but it has the LED lead). It was changed to an Iida unlimited coil module, Stihl PN: 0000 400 1300, in 1993 and retained the AL flywheel. That was changed to an Iida unlimited coil module, Stihl PN: 1122 400 1311, in 1994. The 0000 400 1300 coil is a generic coil and is still used in some of the new larger Stihl saws. The 064 also had a CDIC coil put in them from 1989, but there was no red light limiter LED. Note that only the 064 AL flywheels have two key slots. This is to accomodate different types of ignition; one was for electronic ignition, and the other was for analog points and condenser ignitions. On these flywheels, B stands for Bosche (old points) and P stands for Prufrex (new electronic). "

That quote was taken from @windthrown on another forum.

First step would be to figure out if you have a dual or single key flywheel. May try posting a wanted add in the trading post here for parts.

The light is a tuning aid.
Start with the high rich and lean it till the light just comes on.
It was supposed to help tune the high because of limited coil.

Thank you Cease232! That parts list and info helped alot!

Here is some photos of the saw. Does the flywheel and coil look to be correct? I don't see an extra lead for the LED light so I am assuming someone has already swapped the coil and flywheel but I could be wrong. Hopefully someone on here can look at it and recognize more than i can.

I will pm you JMSsaws. Mainly looking for a used carburetor as the new ones from.stihl are pretty spendy. Looking for a walbro wj-67 I think.

I recently sold a good running Stihl 066, clean as a whistle and with a 30" bar and two chains for $550. A thousand pardons to all of us here. I should have kept it in the shop. That saw cut like a bandit and ran flawlessly. I'll never forget it nor forgive myself for letting it go.

Well it's unfortunate that they put the number on the inside of it... There is no part # on the coil itself?

Here are some pictures that may help.

My original limited coil 066 redlight. Notice the single key way on the flywheel.

Limited redlight module vs unlimited 066 module. (Redlight is the larger one)

This is fairly easy to figure out. Remove the cover, spark plug and recoil, stuff a cord in the cylinder and use a 13mm socket to remove the nut retaining the flywheel.

Is your coil bad?

Thank you for the pictures.

I am not sure if the coil is bad, I havent been able to start it up untill I get a carb on it. Just want to make sure the saw isn't going to have issues with the coil that is on it as it is not the stock redlight coil.

Based on your pictures, I have the unlimited coil. Should I go ahead and pull the flywheel off to make sure it is compatible with the coil?

The 066 changes are enough to make my head spin. I may have misdirected you repeating incorrect info. Any of the coils will work with that fly wheel. I was Always under the impression that the flywheel needed to be changed in order to run the unlimited coil. Apparently that's not true and either the 1311 or 1300 coil will work fine with the aluminum flywheel.
The only down side is that the crank end on the early 066 is very small and that AL flywheel is heavy. They were prone to spinning off if over reved.
Anyways you should be good to go, no need to pull the fly wheel. Keep us updated.

Was this issue pretty common? I'm kicking around the idea of swapping it out for the Polymer flywheel to prevent the "spinning off" issue. I don't plan on using the saw for commercial timber cutting but rather just cutting firewood of all sizes with the occasional tree felling here and there. Should i be worried about the aluminum flywheel spinning off or should i just roll with it and hope for the best? Much rather swap it out while the key way is still intact, but if its nothing to worry about than i wont. Thank you everyone for helping with this and putting up with all these questions. Much appreciated!

Not possible to swap it out. With the polymer flywheel stihl changed the crank and made minor modifications to the case. Just use it and hope for the best. I've only read about the problem. Never an actual account of it happening.
