Hi Guys,

Just thought I would share this rebuild with everyone. Opinions and idea's are always good when doing this stuff.

Bit of back ground on this one before we get started. I purchased it from a Arborist who was at my house clean up a 80+ year old rain tree that had fallen over in a cyclone about 5 weeks ago. Got the usual story " it was running but it just stopped one day".

Now it's not a pretty saw but other than the fuel and oil caps everything is there, which sometimes is a good thing.

I did a full rebuild on my 076 super, great news is all the parts are available still from Stihl :)

Looks like it’s had a hard life! Compression on these with good rings it should be shoulder dislocating trying to turn the engine over. Pull it hard and fast and it’s not too bad.

So I got into it a little bit this afteroon. Starting removing things and getting them ready for some cleaning.

First was all the top and side covers. And then next was the exhaust . Well that certainly was a surprise. I have no idea what that is sitting inside the exhaust port but I am sure that's the reason why it won't turn over.

Yep Bob you are correct. I went home after work and measured the piston, and it's 52mm not a 58mm. So I guess my Stihl 075/076 rebuild has now become a Stihl 051 rebuild

I really should have done more homework before ordering gaskets, carby kit, genuine rod bearing and more. I am very disappointed in myself. I was just excited to get into another rebuild and not doing enough homework has cost money.

Well the cylinder is toast. I can see now why he said "it just stopped working one day" The piston has grabbed the cylinder and damaged it, plus having it sit in his shed full of crap in the cylinder has also damaged the chrome bore as well. I'm guessing just over worked and not looked after. However on the bright side I have 2 x complete Stihl 051 part saws sitting at home that will have a good cylinder I can use.

Cheers

Justin

Looks like one of those "rebuilds" that is going to be more new parts than original parts if and when you get it finished.
Get the cylinder off and measure the bore= I would agree you are more likely to find 52mm rather than 58mm and a whole gardens worth of compost.
I use the gardens worth of compost for heat.I clean my saws in my boiler room before i take them to the parts washer,so into the gasification boiler it goes. I also found that putting a greasy plugged muffler in the bottom burn area gets rid of all the crap inside and out.Let it cool and blow it out with an air hose,as clean as you will ever get it.

You can still make it a 075/076 rebuild...
Just find a piston and cylinder, studs and a few other parts to do the conversion.
Hi Yukon,

Yeah I did think of that. I have in my possession a brand new old stock 076 58mm cylinder, with piston and rings. But I think I might just keep it for when I really do have a 075/076 to rebuild.

I ordered a gasket kit last night for it but this time before I order a new piston and rings I will put apart my (parts saws) and just make sure everything is perfect. I do not want to make the same error twice.

So I have some questions.

I have gotten both my 051 part chainsaws out and compared to the one I was going to rebuild they are different. These have the Oil fillers on top and all 3 of them including the possible rebuild one have different recoil covers.

And one of the 051 saws has a decompression button, while the other 2 do not.

I didn't realize there was so many difference.

Wait till you start looking at the oilers.
Next time you are looking at a 051/075/076 for a project the numbers you showed 1111 are for the family of saws.075/076 all had the manual oiler button.051's didn't.

Hey guys,

Tomorrow i'm getting back onto the 051 rebuild but I am not really sure what to do. The 051 that has the decomp button has a damage case becasue a tree landed on it and no spark, but compression, the other 051 is a complete saw with compression but no spark. But the two donor saws have top oil filler caps and the rebuild saw is a side cap type, and all 3 saws including the one I would like to rebuild have different side/recoil covers.

I am thinking that I should use the damaged case 051 with the decomp button as the donor saw and just leave the other 051 complete and just go chasing a coil for it.

Decisions decisions,,,mmmm

Or maybe I should wait and find the correct model of Stihl 051 that goes with the one I want to rebuild and use that as the donor saw,,,,,,,what do I do ???????????
