story is pretty simialr to yours .. i bought it on ebay - it was advertised as a 075 too. when arrived it had no compression the piston and cylinder were scored really badly, the seller was an *******.
i posted the pictures ot the saw on the forum and was then told it was actually a 051.
i managed to find a good second hand piston and pot, the clutch side bearing had loads of play so i split the the saw and rebuilt it. the bearing was a nightmare as i think there were two different onesfor this saw, a normal ball bearing race and the other being the obsolete roller bearing, mine being the latter. anyway i managed to find a replacement and shes back together and seems pretty happy!
every cloud has asilver lining .. soon after, i managed to buy a 075 for absolute peanuts which at 111cc, has a bit more gusto and a bigger fuel tank so you can mill a big board without having to stop halfway through to refuel!

So this weekend i decided to give the wife a hand in the yard instead of spending time in the shed.

Whoever said working on and restoring chainsaw was dangerous. I think helping the wife is just as dangerous.

I stepped backward out of the garden and fell over the dog. Badly dislocated finger and a trip to the hospital.

Yeah I should of done more homework. I was just excited at the time and I will definitely know better next time. It was too expensive but I still should have done more homework.

How are you still typing?!? That finger would have been great for reaching keys though I guess :)

I got the cylinder back from the machine show early last week and this the first time I have had time to work on it.

I also decided to give this cylinder a bit of a port and polish before I reassemble. This is my first every try at porting a chainsaw cylinder, so I only gave it a very very minor port and polish. More of a clean up really than a full on porting but I think I didn't do too bad a job for my first try.
I need to do a bit more polishing and try to make it a nice fine finish before it all goes back together.

Gave is a blasting in the cabinet as well .

Have a Meteor Piston and ring kit turning up during the week as well, so I will need to make sure everything is clean and ready to go.

Ouch,(!) Enjoying this thread. I also rebuilt an 051av, figure I’m the third owner! 2nd owner had gotten it for free, barn-fresh with some carb rot. My first surprise with the saw was a weird clutch had been put on, and it galled the crankshaft threads. Otherwise I had it pretty easy in comparison to these. Don’t know if rebuilding it was a cost-effective endeavor but it was really satisfying when the saw finally worked.

Got the new piston and Caber rings installed tonight. All sealed up nice and tight. I will let all cure overnight before I started bolting up other things.

Did some more work again last night on the 051.

The first thing I did once the recoil cover was fitted was to check for spark and I cannot tell you how happy I was to see nice bright blue spark. There was no way I could check it before I pulled the engine down as it was seized.

I am still not confident enough yet in my engine building skills to go all out and paint the cases and body of the 051. Just don't want to spend the extra money just in case I have stuffed up with the engine. If this saw goes all back together and runs then the next project that i have had apart for sometime now ( Stihl 08S ) I will paint everything.

I still need to remove and clean all the clutch assembly as well. Hopefully if I get time tonight I will do all that and then start fitting the top cover.
