I just bought a couple older Stihl‘s a 044 and a 038AV for $80. Can anyone tell me what year they are and if the 044 is the 10mm or 12mm wrist pin ? The 044 start with 131 in the pictures. Thanks for any help

Could the one that doesn’t come up be to old to be in the database? I double checked the 038 and there’s only 7 numbers and doesn’t look like any numbers wore off. Thanks for looking

So the red switch levers are from older saws? Mine has that little circled x on it as well. But I'm sure it's a 12; it has the later white plastic model badge, and the serial starts with 143.

On your 044, what does it say on the right side for carb adjustment? Are they all 3/4 and 1/4, or are the earlier ones different?

Mine doesn’t say anything on the right side of the carb other than H and L. Mine has the metal badge riveted on top. I don’t have any red switch levers but it does have the switch for heated handle bar which was disconnected.

Only other number I can find is 1128 is stamped on the top of the cylinder. I think I read in another post the 1128 is just to verify it’s a 044 or 046 model ?

Thanks HarleyT I’ll have to read that info. I did a compression test on the 044 and it’s at 145. The handle bar, throttle handle and carb are all heated so that should help narrow down the year. I didn’t pull the cylinder off yet but it looks in great shape through the carb and exhaust ports. I don’t know that much about gasket delete with Stihl‘s or even if you can do it to the 044. Thanks for all the help.

wonder why my serial number isn’t even close to to the ones they list. The ones in the chart are 8 digit and mine is 9. Unless it’s quite a bit newer than I though. Thanks for the info

038 AV was made between 1980 andd 1985. If its farmboss then from 1983 to 1985. If its super or magnum than might been made later right to 2003.
044 waa made from 1988 to 2001

In 1980/1981 Stihl changed from 7 to 9 digits SN...so that 038AV should be 1980/1981
