Thinning a Hemlock Copse

I have a small copse of hemlocks that are competing with each other, and I would like to thin it down to 2 or 3 trees. Will cutting the trees close to the ones I keep negatively affect the kept trees? If so, is there a way to mitigate that? I ask because I thinned a different area on my property last year, and I cut a standing dead hemlock that a live one was starting to absorb at the base, and it seems to have shocked the live one to the point that I doubt it will survive.
