I practice climbing on a sweet gum in my yard. It looks like it's had some kind of bug problem. I've noticed this same pattern in my pecan tree. Is anyone familiar with what might cause this? It's been like this for quite a few years. Not sure if it's getting worse or not. Does it weaken the tree to the point of being unsafe? I should have put my hand in pic for scale. This is about 35 or 40 feet up, where the stem is about 8 inch diameter.

No problem. Get lots of new clients calling saying bugs are attacking their trees and 90 % of the time it is sapsucker damage. They can wreak havoc on younger thin barked species.
