Thank you. How % certain are you?Tulip
This tree came down with the Derecho storm in Cedar Rapids, Ia. It doesn't smell or look like the elm species I have cut.If it is tulip it will make good siding.
If it's elm not so much.
I'm just guessing, are you in a region with tulip trees?
Thanks for the info. The bark was really thick similar looking to cottonwood.Tulips are native to Iowa, they are in the magnolia family. If you ever cut a magnolia that's what it would smell like.
When you have a barkless log not much to go on for ID.
Ha that's what I'm afraid of and hoping it isn't cotton wood. Is Tulip generally a heavy tree? This log was not near as heavy as a similar sized Oak tree.Very possible that it is cottonwood, white poplar is very similar to yellow poplar (tulip).
Thanks. I will try taking a pic of the trunk next week. Appreciate it!Tulip is light when dry, heavy when green due to water weight.
