I have three apple trees and two pecan trees in my yard. How can I protect
the fruit from birds and squirrels. They ruin my crop every year.
Chesapeake, VA

Bring the trees inside (just kidding). No, honestly, the nuts and fruit are their natural foods. Unless you are willing to dessicrate the squirrel and bird populations in Chesapeake, I think they will probably get 1st crack at your crop.

If the trees are not too big, you may be able to protect them from birds with some type of mesh netting, although the squirrels will probably eat right through it. Netting is available from A.M. Leonard, http://www.amleo.com . They also sell Birds-Away Flashing Tape, a silver and red streamer that reflects in the breeze to scare away birds.
