Does anyone know where i can buy a small spade to pull with my truck or tractor that can handle 1"- 4" diameter trees? Who makes new equipment? Your help would be appreciated. I am thinking about transplanting some trees I grew from whips in my yard to the wild on my hunting ground. Thanks again.

The rule of thumb set by the American Nurserymans Assoc. is one foot of ball per caliper inch. So a 4 in tree needs a 48 in spade. That may be too big for a small tractor.

There are a number of companies that move used spades.

Ceck this out

and this search. I like the look of the "optimal" design. A dome shaped ball vise the cone shape of the more comon spade.

Theres a company that makes a portable spade , not powered, you pound the blades in by hand. I think they're called tree frog or something like that? If I find it I'll let you know. They had them at a trade show I went to last year alot of people were raving about them?
Found it http://www.treetoad.com/ , oops tree toad:p

Thanks Toddppm and John Sanborn for help on finding sites for tree spades. Looks like good places to start. I would like to play around in this tree growing business a little if I thought I could break even on my investments. I like watching them grow.

Do you know of any books that could walk me through all the steps to doing this right? What do you guys think? I have no knowledge of tree care, Pruning, pest control etc. I do have one hell of a green thumb. Thanks, Tom

For a nursury, I would look into getting a Bobcat-type skid loader. They have a tree spade attachment available. This one piece of equipment will perform many functions and take the place of several pieces.
I'd get an auger also, for planting larger trees. You will end up making as much or more planting a 3"-4" tree as selling it.

Try e-mailing the people ar Riche's Foxwillow Pines. They like talking the buisness. And let them know that you heard of them here too.

As for making money, Put a sign out saying Hensons discount nursery, youll have people coming around <g>.

Contact local installers and find out what native plants they need regularly.
