True Ripping?

So, I'm new to milling, and have a question regarding ripping. In milling, we are not "truly" ripping because the bar (& thus the chain) would have to be parallel to the log to be considered truly ripping. Is this correct? When milling, are we actually quarter-sawing? Thanks for the help!
 
Chainsaw milling is what I would call ripping. In order to quarter saw you have to cut 90 degrees to the grain, or growth rings. Think of it as cutting a pie. It is somewhat wasteful, but that is how you get quarter sawn lumber.
