Been taking a few walnut trees out over the past year and milling them. The species has varied but was told one was a black, other English. I dropped one at my brothers house today and noticed there is hardly any dark heartwood in this one, also the others don’t have much either. Is it a region thing that prevents them from growing like the typical ones I’ve seen. The one I dropped today was 45 years old, could age be the issue? Curious as to why this is?

Are you sure it's Walnut? The white line should only be around the outside of the log! Maybe an inch or two. Young ones can have more till it matures some. But I have also never been to your area. Any good pics of bark?

Up in the PNW corner of Washington and Canada. Walnut based off my best guess but you guys please inform me!

Sweet gum would be pretty neat! Almost hoping it’s not walnut now since something else would be pretty rare for this area. Seems like decently hard wood to mill. Definitely harder on chains than big leaf maple.

Gumball aka Sweetgum.
Trash wood around here, varies by region.
This is a black walnut I harvested this fall.
It will be a mantel eventually.

That’s the walnut I hope to have one day for the same purpose! Well I’m going with sweetgum then! I like the brightness of it, maple usually has a dull or yellow color to it. Just wrapped up! May attempt the rest for a mantle but may just go to firewood too.CF130C5F-196B-46ED-8F11-B7E3CF3EB14A.jpeg

Kind of like cottonwood around here...worthless stuff but grows like a weed. They typically get cut down and left.

Definitely a Sweetgum tree. Have one in my yard and it’s going to be coming down this Summer as it’s almost dead and hardly produced those spikey green balls it produces. Doubt I’ll using it for firewood in the wood stove but will be good enough for the outdoor fire ring.
