My husband has his heart set on planting a weeping birch tree in our front yard. I have been told that this tree is not extremely suitable for Saskatchewan's climate and does not live as long as many other trees. Are there any steps to take to help the tree survive longer? Are there any other trees similar in look to the weeping birch that we could purchase here that are more suitable? My husband wants to plant the tree within the week! Help!!

Weeping birch (It is called Betula pendula in latin) is a boreal european species. I have seen them thrive in Thunder Bay, and I suspect that they will do well in Sask. Have no fear, as boreal trees will be hardy for your climate. If anything will get the tree, it will be descication from the winds you more than likely experience.

Get the shovel.
