Neighbor called and said free wood.
Anyway the tree had died last summer in his yard .he had someone lay it down for him in late fall and he and I cut it up today.
Most of the bark has fallen off
And it's an absolute bear to split .its very stringy and hard to bust
Either way I got to spend the afternoon feeling manly with my saws.

That's what I thought it was but wasn't sure.really didn't want the tree but I hated to tell him no as a few years back he took out several hickory trees and I was the recipient of all them .

Sometimes you just have to take the bad with the good.
It'll make some shoulder season wood

more stringy elm...…...was using this stuff to test out my gas to electric splitter conversion; swapped out one of those predator engines (which was working fine) for a 240 Volt, 21 amp, single phase motor, couldn't get the motor to draw over 11 amps with the elm and that was only for the first second or two of initial engagement then down to 9 amps or less to finish the split stroke. All other species I've tried so far result in lower amp draw.GEDC2667.JPG

American elm. Looks like it died of Dutch Elm Disease. First pic, piece of wood to the left has classic galleries from the Elm Bark Beetle larva.
