My friend gave me 3 wheel barrel loads of black walnut shells with the hulls and they make excellent stove fuel they burn hot and leave little ash. I suppose the oils in the nuts is what really burns hot.
I recommend you let the hulls dry from green to black before using otherwise they will produce a fog show from the chimney.
 
interesting use.
Tannins in the shell also etch knives or axes to a nice matte gray finish. Might be the acetic acid or vinegar but they seem to work well. Not a use for barrels and barrels of them though....
 
I've occasionally burned them in outside pit and got sick of to picking up wheelbarrow loads off the lawn before I cut that "very valuable black walnut" tree ;)
Not a fan of the wood in the stove either due to high ash production, so I mostly avoid it as I have a better selection to spend my time on.
However, I do like it in woodworking projects!
