Hello, I got this log from a suburban property already cut down with nothing to ID it by but the bark and wood. It's from upstate NY, near Albany. The home-owner swears its sugar maple but the bark does not look right. Once milled the figure does look like maple. Anyone have the answer? Thanks
That bark appearance looks like 4 different trees that grow on my property.
Basswood (it's not), Poplar (it's not), Ash and Hickory. I have never seen a maple with that type of bark here. I'd guess Hickory.
I'm starting to think its Norway maple as Bmac suggested. I don't think Hickory can have grain like that can it? Definitely looks like maple grain to me.
Here is some Norway Maple I milled, looks like yours. Nice wood to work with. Leaf is very similar to Sugar Maple and likely the reason the home owner was confused.
