Picked this up today, guy said it was walnut. I told him when I got there, that it was not walnut. What say you? Somewhat stringy. Southern Michigan wood.

He may be right. It looks much like the not highly valuable English walnut I got from my new best friend at the tree service cutting a 1/2 mile down the road last year. That's what he said it was anyway and even mentioned it was cut because of all of the walnuts it dropped every year.
 
Looks like smooth hickory. I think the smell would really distinguish whether its Hickory, Walnut or something else
