Picked this up today, guy said it was walnut. I told him when I got there, that it was not walnut. What say you? Somewhat stringy. Southern Michigan wood.

He may be right. It looks much like the not highly valuable English walnut I got from my new best friend at the tree service cutting a 1/2 mile down the road last year. That's what he said it was anyway and even mentioned it was cut because of all of the walnuts it dropped every year.

Butternut aka white walnut
That’s a guess and I’m not sure but it’s the best I can come up with.

Thanks for the replies. The wood looks and smells like hickory, but the bark doesn't.

First thought was hickory, second thought was that the bark looks like Ginko, but the wood does not.

I would say hickory.

Looks like smooth hickory. I think the smell would really distinguish whether its Hickory, Walnut or something else

Hickory. That looks like bitternut hickory. The bark has a waxy look to it.
