Wood identification /difficult to split

Any idea what kind of wood this is? Location is Foothills of Smokey Mountains. Log was left behind after some neighborhood logging.

Tough to split..when it does split it shatters more than splits. Very sinewy.

Lower right picture is where diamond head wedge sank in a bit and then bounced out after full force hit from 8lb sledge

It's very heavy and dense.

Smaller (6 to 9 inch) logs tend to break in half rather than split all the way from top to bottom.
 
yes, that's the same stuff but not sure what it is. I don't think it's sweet gum. The stringiness indicates some kind of hickory. we have shag bark hickory in other locations (miles from this location) but none near this tree
