Hey Fellers,
I go by axe, I’m 27, I’ve been doing tree work since I was 18. I started dragging brush and humping logs for the first 2 years. Then taught myself to climb from untying my bosses knots. Long story short I still use simple monkey knot, running bowline, and Clove hutch. One rope. Climb to the top.. use chicken strap... tie in.. no more chicken strap.. old school. I’m tired of being transient I have worked in New Jersey, Florida, and Orange County California. I am experienced on bucket truck, crane work, and have ran crews for the last 5 years. I’m tired of making other people money!! I am an intelligent person I just don’t know how to go about things the right way.. all I want is basic liability and business license.. who do I call? I will climb and have one trusted rope man for first year or 2 until I can trust someone with a chainsaw lol. I could use a mentor in this area.. any help is much appreciated.. stay safe

Is there a local chamber of commerce? Can be a good place to find a business coach...even if not a tree work coach, somebody who can help you find where to do the business stuff.

You at least need to talk to an insurance agent, account, and attorney. I'd recommend you find one then ask them to give you references for the other 2. Consider setting up an LLC, and definitely open a separate bank account for the business. Licensing will be both a State and local thing.

TCIA has a mentoring program. I'd recommend looking into joining.

Where are you located? I'm in the King of Prussia area (southeast PA). I use C.H. Bonnet for my business insurance, they're a broker and looked around to find me the best quote. You need at least $1,000,000 of liability insurance for most government contracts, and Inland Marine insurance for your trucks/equipment. Don't skimp on the injury insurance, I believe the state minimum is $5,000, but that hardly covers an ambulance ride. I'll attach a link to their website. https://www.chbonnett.com/about

As far as business license, go to the website for the PA Department of State. It is pretty straightforward and I believe costs around $130.

Hope this helps.
