...i put a 050 1/4 inch Oregon chain and bar 3/8 on a 170. It came with the 043 pico.the chain is a semi chisel with a round point...cuts ok but not great to sharpen...i am using a 1/4 file..
will a regular 3/8 chisel fit on this 16 inch bar?? or does it have to be smaller?

For a 1/4” chain it’s a 1/8” file. I don’t think the 170 has the power to spin the full chisel. I think the 1/4” might be max. I’m not sure if the .325” would work on it with a clutch and bar change.

can I get a 1/4 chain that is at least better than the Oregon semi chisel that comes in the bar/chain sets that sell at Walmart??I paid 26 $
for that set....the 043 pico that the 170 came with broke quickly....any other suggestions..??

I don't have a MS 170, but I have a MS 171 with Stihl 16" bar and .050 full chisel on it and it does well. It will be a bit more $$, but worth it in my opinion.

Yes, the .043" is a PITA. Just replace the b&c with regular 3/8" .050" low profile. I believe that Stihl calls this "Picco" chain. BTW, you can't run 1/4" chain on a 3/8" sprocket!
