There are lots of YouTube videos on carburetors. I found these, by 'TheRepairSpecialist', to be very simple and clear, explaining how a chainsaw carb works, following the flow of fuel and air, demystifying all the little holes and passages (EDIT: Note 'tickover' is British for idle speed.):

Thanks for the 500i manual, it's newer than the one I had. Do you have a 550i IPL that shows the wrap handle?
