    Fixing bad pruning

Inherited a lot of bad pruning jobs from prior owner, stubs everywhere, see pics. Some of the stubs have decay and I'm inclined to cut a bit of the collar that's grown up on the stub to get the tree to "re-heal" around a fresh cut. What do you think? got some pine, sycamore, crab apple, maple...

I have a Sycamore tree in my front yard in southeastern Michigan that is approximately 180 years old. The trunk has a few vertical splits in it, and a few tree service companies have been canvassing my neighborhood and each pointed out the splits and asked me if I wanted to take the tree down...

Is this caused by the woolly adelgid?

Hello, I recently cut down a hemlock (around 12" dbh), split open a section of the base, and saw this white mold-like substance right in the middle of the heartwood. A few feet up the tree, the problem seemed to clear up. I spotted white deposits on the undersides of some needles too, which...

Why I Won't Plant A Tree On Arbor Day This Year

Nebraskans take great pride in their state being “the home of Arbor Day”. And being a native Nebraskan, I have been one of those Nebraskans who have shared in that pride and who have faithfully planted or participated in a group planting of a tree on almost every Arbor Day for all of my life...

I have a Shigometer for sale. It has been on my shelf for a lot of years. Old school method of detecting decay in trees and also used for determining current growth rates of trees (vigor). The growth rate detection is possibly still valuable, but it takes some experience and data from local...

How well could a tree Survive if I...?

How well could a tree survive if I were to drive a wooden stake into the tree? Would the tree die from the drilled hole? Or would the stake act as a covered wound and it would grow around the wooden stake? I don't want to kill the tree. It's a lovely tree. But I have my own reasons for...

    Douglas Fir Stunted Growth

I planted this tree in 1996 along with 50 other firs. This is the lone survivor and it certainly has stunted growth. It is very healthy looking in appearance but just remains very small. Any suggestions on what is happening?
