Looking to add a bigger saw not that I need one just because I can. Not saying any of the saws I list cannot pull longer bars just what I found was what I liked or not, and the way I like the saw to pull and giving reference to the way I want the next saw to pull 24-28"chain length.
Husky Rancher 61 ran with a 16" B&C did not like the way it pulled a 20"
Husky 266XP 16" did not like the way it pulled a 20"
Wanted a saw to pull a 20" so moved on from the previous Huskies.
Stihl 044s 20" did not like the way it pulled a 24" and still running them with 20" today.
Tried a friends Stihl 462 with 24" did not like the way it pulled it I thanked him for letting me try his saw.
Still running Stihl 026/260/261 running 16" never bothered trying longer bars from past experience with 60cc Huskies.

Will the 372 pull a 24" the same as my 044s pulling a 20"? I have my doubts it will pull a 28" like my 044s pulling 20"
Will the 390 pull a 28" chain the same as my 044s pulling a 20"

Main usage would be bucking firewood 24-30" Red Oak, Anything smaller than 24" wood would most likely revert back to my 044s pulling 20" chain and 261s limbing and or smaller wood bucking.

Thanks for bearing with me threw that rather long post.

Math gives me a headache and is not much fun, Is it as simple as 24" chain is about 20% longer than a 20" chain so I would require a 20% increase in power to pull the same? 28" is % more than 20" so require % more power? going to get some aspirin.

Get a 395 with a 28" and be done with it.
Going off the formula of your first post- not liking medium bars on any CC range that might suit them and opting for shorter bars for those saws- a 372 with a 28" is not going to impress you and be too similar to an 044 that you already have.
390 is a nice "step up".
If you were cutting softwoods- different story, but if mainly hardwoods- CC's count.

First thank you for reading and grasping the intent of my question.

A 395 is not out of the question just comes with a bit more weight disadvantage.
Likely looking used, 372s are to be had with a few 390s and 395s being few and far between. Bummed I missed the 395 in the classifieds a few months back but that was before I was looking.

Work on the theory that- one missed is one you will never catch up on.

Have you any experience with ported saws a nicely ported 372 might be a option but they aren’t cheap

im giving thought to a Dolmar 7900. lil bump in power from the 70cc options listed.

Nice old saws, I have 3- but I still grabbed a 281/181 last weekend because the deal seemed too good to be true.
Still crying over missing out on the ported 395 from a few months back at about $650.

Looking at a used 2012 390XP 28" bar and 3 chains $900 looks extremely low hours if even broke in guessing less than 10tanks of fuel.

A new 395 guessing in the $1500 ballpark. an extra $600 for something that is basically going to be a toy, If it was something I was still making money with it might be a bit different decision.

Hi Billy GGGGGG

I'd say get the 390. I haven't run a stock 044 but a 440/460 hybrid had less grunt than a stock 75cc 372 so I'm guessing a 372 would probably be equal to your 044's. 395's are okay but my 2100 will take a 395's lunch money and 395's are noticeably heavier than a 390. I would not pack my brother's 395 around all day if I didn't have to, but my 390 seems pretty manageable. My 390 is capable of pulling at least a 36" in the softwoods out here so a 28" in hardwoods should be fine for one. If you get a 390 and it isn't quite where you want it, get it ported!
Disclaimer: Out in the PNW we can run 32's on 372 so my guesses on what can pull what are purely based on what you've said.

Pwfffft! $1500 is pocket change- we pay $2,765 for a brand spanking new 395 wearing a 24" bar and chain here- goes up to $2,805 if you want one with a 28" combo.

Yeah, but you have skipped over the governed carb and altered the breathability of a 2100 have you not?
Below 30" bar- I would still opt for the 395 as a daily driver and weight only comes in to it if you carry more than cut.

I can't notice a difference between a governed and ungoverned 2100, heck, I don't even know if my own 2100 is still governed or not. I've never had the governors kick in to the best of my knowledge, and I've run them on a mill and with a 42" bar buried so I'm not sure when they would kick on. Yes, my 2100 has a green weenie, but I have yet to find a 2100/2101/298 with the factory filter setup in the wild. With the weight, I typically hike 3-5 miles per day with a saw if I'm doing cutting around the yard so weight is a big concern for me. If I wasn't hiking around that much, I'd probably agree. Plus, the 395 I've run didn't really seem that impressive to me, so I'm a bit biased.

Not trying to derail my own thread, but does the money going in the pocket equal the money going out? I think the US Federal minimum wage here is around $7.50 per hour what is minimum wages there?

If the 395 isn't off the table I'd definitely recommend it or a 394xp for grunt.
Looking at your feelings about the other saws I definitely would not recommend a 372xp stock.
What I am seeing is the 372XP is out, stock or maybe ported for my wants pulling a 24" chain let alone a 28"

390 will pull a 24" the way I want, but a 28" may not pull the way I want without being ported.

395XP will likely pull a 28" the way I want but with a weight disadvantage compared with a 390XP

Ideally what I am wanting is a saw pulling 28" chain the same or similar to my 70cc 044s pulling 20" chain
