I picked this saw up last spring and finally got around to looking at it. When I bought it, the guy had said the dealer told him it needed a coil or the carb solenoid. I can’t remember which but I purchased the kit which had both and the orange fuel filter. Worth noting the saw was missing the tank filter. Piston and cylinder are perfect, has strong spark. I replaced the carb solenoid, coil and filter. Still no start. It will start with a squirt down its throat. There is fuel getting to carb. Also the tank seems to be under pressure. This is a “new” saw to me, but I’ve never had a saw hiss fuel after the cap was only on for a minute. Possibly tank vent? I haven’t checked the carb screen, could be clogged from no filter.2CABD5DE-DD41-4BC7-A2BC-3D2FA4C3CD05.jpeg965ABAC3-DB10-498F-91F0-4FBC28C5A193.jpegD9220649-C0BF-4E23-88EB-27CE097C6957.jpeg6D2AEA86-D0D7-4731-85C0-15D58F5F97DD.jpeg

Run without a fuel filter?

First thing to check is the inlet screen in the carb.
Yeah. I got the saw that way. Never used it only pulled the rope a few times to get a compression reading. But I wanted to see if the electronic wizardry I replaced would get it running. Carb comes off easy I’ll have a look.

So you got a saw with no fuel filter fitted, then fitted a solenoid to the carb, but failed to actually take the carb apart and check the condition of the diaphragms and give it a good going over / clean, so you didnt get bits in the new solenoid ??
I went with advice of the previous owner and the dealer. Also this isn’t a 30 year old 038. The carb internals should not be dried out. At least not in 400 plus saws I’ve worked on. But thanks for the helpful tips. And like I said I’ve never had one of these newer electronic saws apart before. A while back I was told that this kit solved some common problems with the mtronic saws. Which is why I bought the kit. On any other saw the carb would be taken apart.

More abuse. This poor saw was sure beat up on. Broken isolator mount that also holds the pin for the chain brake to attach. I performed light surgery on it using jb weld and a piece of steel as a re-enforcement on the back side. I’ve had good luck using it on aluminum mower decks and a brake release handle on my 6k lift. See how it holds under the constant pull of that spring.6F8E3468-1F27-4FEE-931E-7B2D6E9D4A15.jpeg6C12BA94-6E14-4016-BFA8-50E458921EE7.jpeg

Gets even weirder with this saw. I repaired the broken a/v mount/brake spring retainer. Should hold. While in there I noticed the clutch was loose/wobbly. Like no bearing in there. And..no bearing. Also missing all 3 clutch springs. This saw had an issue then became a parts machine.269D5F4D-6E0C-4670-AA18-093C74C75695.jpeg173ADA29-3F9F-4772-81F0-A378C1703A32.jpeg09EFE699-A940-4E4D-A4DF-CBF47175E412.jpeg
