I've been trying this milling out for the last month or so. Thought I was doing good until I sharpened my chains. I've got 2 ripping chains from Bailey's.
When I needed to sharpen I bought this sharpener from TSC. I thought I've done it by the book, but only got 2 10ft cuts before I decided it wasn't working.
It had a lot finer dust than it did when new.
I put the bottom twist set to 10* and angled the top over 15*.
Did I get this backwards?

I should probably say this oak has been down since May-June.

99% of the time fine dust means your rakers are " too high".
Throe the 0.025" raker gauge away and look up "Progressive raker depth setting"
It's discussed in the Milling 101 sticky thread.
Using the progressive raker depth method will enable chains to cut like (no, , , , better than) new ones right up to teh point where the cutters are so short they start breaking off.

Thanks Bob, yea I've read all that thread, that's tons of info. Even found your thread on progressive rakers depth. All in all, that's well over my head here [emoji2357].....or maybe I'm just making it to complicated to get it right [emoji2369].

I did just find another video with the grinder I'm using and I had it set wrong. I had the top part of the grinder set to 15* off 90* (85*)
In the video I just seen he said it's best to set it at about 60*. I'll try that plus adjust more aggressive on my depth gage.

If you find the progressive raker method too hard then consider using the old timers method.

Take 5/6 swipes of all rakers - try it - if saw doesn't grab - repeat.
When it starts to be grabby take 3/4 file swipes of the cutter - You cant really use a grinder for this.

I finally got a chance to get back out an try the new angles and depths. This time it went way better than the last log so that's a plus. I may have went a tad extreme on the depth as it wanted to bog the saw, but if I held it back a bit instead of letting it go it worked out good.
Now onto the next [emoji106]
