Hey all! I’m making a sharpening jig out of unusable chainsaw bars for fire stations (I have a post in the trading post thread)that I will be welding angle iron to the bars and they are only for holding the chain. Thought I would share the design, it’s simple enough and anyone with any kind of welding experience or even a beginner can do this or at least attempt. Also If your willing to part with some old .050 3/8s or 20” .325 .063 bars sitting on a shelf wasting space for cheap (or cost of shipping??) let me know!

I like your tensioning jig. Looks pretty simple too, for someone with some basic welding skills to make. Similar to the commercially available 'Chainmeister' product, which was was discussed in the threads below. @Tree Machine 's development process, described in the first thread, might provide some insight or inspiration to others making their own. Or a place to buy one if they would prefer.

A key difference (aside from the price and labor) is that the Chainmeister is designed to attach to any guide bar, without modification, rather than to a dedicated bar.

Oh yea I do like that idea. Yea here in the fire service we tend to let a lot of unexperienced 18-22 year olds run a saw and man do they know how to ruin a chain in 8 seconds flat. So we tend to have a lot of chain that needs sharpened so it’ll be pretty beneficial for the guy and gals to have a bar designated for sharpening. It’s a pretty different world here in the wild land firefighting than in the logging world.

Most of my sharpening is on chains used by volunteer disaster response groups. Lots of rocks, debris, and uneven chains from less experienced sharpeners. I use a grinder to bring them back to a useful state. But many file in the field.

Yea we have to teach the guys how to field sharpen since we can be a long ways away from civilization out of the fire line. We have access to an automated grinder that I don’t even remember what it’s called but it’s so stinking fancy that the guys who are ‘in charge’ of it can’t even use it [emoji2371]. We’re in the works to try and get it in our possession so we can actually use the darn thing.
