The American Lung Association in North Carolina is fighting for cleaner air by providing vouchers to help replace or retrofit old wood and coal stove appliances with new, efficient, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-certified appliances. Residential property owners in Cherokee, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Mecklenburg, and Swain counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) community may be eligible for vouchers.
To qualify for a replacement, retrofitting or upgrading, the older wood burning stove/fireplace must be used in regular use in a primary residence during the home-heating season. This program will replace or retrofit inefficient, higher-polluting wood-burning or coal appliances with cleaner-burning, more energy-efficient heating appliances and technologies. Specifically, the following replacement scenarios are eligible and are referred to collectively as "Eligible Replacement Appliances."
Qualifying residents will submit a voucher application to the American Lung Association. If the application is approved, the voucher is valid for four weeks, and in that time the approved resident will bring the voucher to a participating stove retailer. The voucher acts as a 'coupon', discounting the new appliance unit or installation for the resident at point of purchase. After sale and installation, it is then the retailer's responsibility to submit the voucher and all qualifying documentation to the American Lung Association for payment.
