Well, as long as it isnt some kind of Russian scam...... its and early 066 with flat top, metal ID tag, alloy airbox cover and redlight, narrow recoil, dual port muffler.
What is not to like?
Bar and chain look good- no busted up cracked covers, missing the rubber bit that guides the tuning screwdriver to the screw head- but that is all at a glance/
Can be interesting matching up ignition parts for these if something dies, no decomp so you have to eat your Wheaties for breakfast.
If it is not worn out top or bottom end- they are a nice strong saw- not quite as well parts supported as the newer rounder top with decomp sister to the 660- but most can be found and/or is same/similar- or can be swapped out for later versions (ignitions and flywheels- but then you also need the wider recoil cover).

thanks for the breakdown hedgecutter!

I have a friend whos going to pick up the saw, as they are nearby, and as soon as they have their hands on it it’s a done deal! Got a video of it starting and running, sounds great and makes good compression by the looks of it!

I’ll post again when it’s in my hands and I’ll let you know how it all works out👍👍

After doing some more inspecting, it looks like a red light with the Arctic package? (See heating switch Below the tuning access and red light)?

Hoping this is an early touring model of the 066 with all the goodies haha, wish me luck! Should be in my hands by Friday

Alright, the saw is here!

Came in last night, and it is all I wish it to be.

Serial # puts it at 1992(+/-1 year)

Saw is, unbeknownst to the seller, a red light and arctic edition! Lots of fixings on this saw.

I checked all the basics and gave it a rip. It runs like a top! @Bob Hedgecutter was right, you best pull that cord with authority!

Dropped it off at my local shop to be serviced and brought back to its former glory, it drew a crowd! I’m having the small engine guys make sure it’s all running optimal, as well as fixing some worn out bits and pieces. I want the red light and arctic features operating, which is probably easier said than done (idk if they work or not).

She’s found her forever home with me and my company, soon to be toting a 30” bar and handling hemlocks, oaks, and pine trees til I croak!

And holy cow this saw is loud!

My prediction is that you will get a lot of use out of this powerful saw -- at least for several years. I have restored a half dozen of them for loggers. Not much difference between the 066 and an MS660. Be sure it holds a fast idle when starting cold. We have discussed this 066 quirk on other threads, but it can be dealt with. Good Luck!

Thanks for the input! I’ve read that these saws do take a while to warm up, do you recommend tuning on the spot and raising the low idle during this time? Or just let the ol’ lady chug away for a few minutes?

I plan on keeping this beaut in perfect working order for a long time, so any tips or tricks from someone who’s experienced with these would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Kevie

I would just make sure the idle is just high enough so that the chain is not moving or just barely creeping along, even at first startup. If it sounds sluggish, then raise it up. My ears and eyes usually work as well as a tachometer. Watch it carefully through the first tank of fuel and adjust as needed.

I have it tuned to Move the chain slightly, seems to be the sweet spot.

Thanks again 👍 I’ll send a video of it cutting sometime in this forum

I have a ‘92 red eye, flat top, dual port. I got the ‘west coast’ version which was 7.8hp compared to the other at 7.0, factory.
difference was the muffler. Pull the muffler cover and see if the baffle is still there.if so, cut it out. Then open up both the ports a bit but don’t over do it.
big improvement. The saw is quite a bit faster than my ported 661 with a 24” bar in small to medium size wood. That changes in big wood 😜
I used 8t sprocket and comp chain to 28”. Longer, switched to full skip to 42” , mainly to clear chips more easily and reduce sharpening time. Also switched to a 7t sprocket with 32”+ for more torque.
order the AU version oiler if using a 42”+ in gummy wood…or smoke the bar tip :p

congrats on the new toy 😁

Your saw sounds very similar to mine! Duel port muffler, red eye, flat top, no decomp. Mine has the arctic package, which is great where I’m from at In 🇨🇦.

I’ll be fiddling with the muffler when she comes back from the service shop👍 Thank you for the bar specifications, really helpful!

I am slightly concerned with the rumours of the limited coils dropping from their 12,500rpm cutoff and falling closer to 10k, Got anything info for me there?

As stated above, a video of her running will be coming sooner or later.

Thanks👍👍

Sorry for leaving you all hanging! The saw is an absolute beast.

Runs through anything with ease on a 25” full comp setup. Just can’t bog, even through big red oak!

After some small fixes, she is dialed in and worth her weight in gold
