Hello all, i had this in the large equipment forum and it didnt seem to gain any interest there so ill try here......Replacing the carb on my dads horse tiller. From what i can tell its about a 1982 model horse II. While working on it i noticed that the tube that runs back to the tines can turn a little bit meaning if i grab the tines ( tines cover is off) i can rotate that whole unit. It rotates right where it leaves the transmission. This normal? Also replacement tines, are they universal across the older horse line of tillers? Someone have a part number? The serial is 633968. Thanks!

No the tube should not rotate, it should be tight and be able to hold the gear oil inside the gear-case.
You will be able to find forums and all relevant manuals online if you search the net.

Is it a pto horse model?

Here is where you can get your ??'s answered about troy bilt tillers, find service manuals, etc. The first models were made by Gateway and troy bilt bought them out.
They can tell you how to locate model numbers on the gearcase also.
I was flogging one of them old dogs awhile back and chzuck gave me lots of info. Some guys replace those engines with the HF $100 Predator engine with good results. Lots of parts on flea bay. (and lots are overpriced) Take pic's before you remove any tines, the tines have to be installed correctly or it won't dig dirt correctly and are a real puzzle even with pic's if you have a pile of tines. Mine had a big pile of tines that Bubba had removed when I started getting this one back together.
Don't overlook the 3rd link about manuals at the bottom of this post.
Good Luck with yours.

If you can find a guy in these forums by the name of chzuck (Dirt digger) he is a Troy bilt Tiller (Gateway )specialists. Just noticed he is in the 2nd link. He can give you links to download all kinds of Owners manuals and Service info about your old tiller once the correct name (Horse 1, 11, or 111, or Pony and model is ID'ed. If it's the older Gateway their owners manual has lots of good service info and how to safely use the tiller and also the Service manual gets into detail about the gearbox, etc. (Later model owners manuals for eq is usually not much for actual servicing in detail)

Yes, if its a pto horse model the tine tube is slid into the gearbox and held on by two bolts. These can have some slop if loose

Now I thought they were "Troy Bilt" then GardenWay bought them out.
Troy NY was the factory home.
There was never a better tiller made.

Thanks guys for the info!

i got ahold of him and he is looking into it. Thanks alot!

Don't buy the cheap $90 Chi-Com tines, they'll break if you hit a rock. Get the factory hard weld faced ones. They last much longer.

I have a 1971 horse model my Dad brought new. It still runs great, engine smokes a bit but all original. I've replaced the tines a few times and also the tine shaft, it got pitted and started chewing up seals. Besides tune ups and filters/fluids the rest is all original.

Custompartsinc.com 423-257-6800 is a great source for NOS/OEM parts made in USA
