Had an oak fall recently. Just finished de-limbing. In the process of cutting 18” rounds. Curious if someone can give a good estimate of split quantity. The tree has about 60 feet of good wood. Base is about 20”. Drops down to 18, then 16 about 2/3 of the way. Probably ends at about 8 inches. Some pics.

one reason i ask is because i don't feel like hand splitting it, but a splitter rental; is usually about $125, so....

ok, so i'm assuming 1/2+ cord. i'm leaning towards including the wood with an included branch removal. i burn 2 cords year. only did my own gathering when a family member took down a large oak. got about 5 cords. that was a lot of work, with trailer rentals, splitter rental, stacking, unstacking, restacking, getting stung by ground bees!

this probably isn't enough, esp. with the 1-2 year drying time, to bother with. i have a couple of people interested in taking everything. we'll see how it works out.

i would actually do it all myself, but having an electrical issue with my 4runner preventing mew from renting a trailer.

22 inch diameter tree at chest height without significant branching = 1 full cord, and anything bigger or smaller is more or less in proportion to the area of the trunk (square of the diameter x pi) at chest height so an 11 inch tree would be one quarter of a cord. So an 18 inch tree would be (18 x 18) / (22 x 22) so 0.67 cords, or two face cords. The extra branch is gravy. This table says the same thing. https://ucanr.edu/sites/placernevadasmallfarms/files/76320.pdf

tough one for me. on family property so it had to be cleaned up one way our another. did call a tree service. they came by and estimated $850! decided to handle it myself. if it was 1.5-2 cords, i would keep the wood, rent a splitter, and air dry it for 1-2 years. .5+ cord is not worth the costs alone. green wood is about $200 delivered, "seasoned" about $275.

You're not a real firewood guy.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Green or dry red oak bust pretty easy even with a double bit axe. That one has a softer center so just try to hit the outer edges.Noodle what you cant bust and save the rental cost.1-2 years drying time?Bust it now and get it stacked .Cover it around November and you will have good wood by spring or next fall.
