Hello folks,

I recently picked this up from a fellow arborist, who claimed it was a 268xp. The side cover says 266 and the back plate with the Serial number has fallen off. Any tips on identifying it?

That's a 268 or 272 Pull the top cover
And take pics
The 268 top cover will not fit a 266 that has a different ignition system
The case's and top cover are different.
Between the 266 and 268/272

My 272 (early) has a different recoil style, was there an older recoil 272?

If that's the original top cover check for a date and year code stamping
Inside the cover.

Easiest/quickest way to identify which saw it is, is to look at the location of the front mounting screw for the top cover in relation to the upper left recoil cover screw. If the top cover screw is located forward of the recoil screw is is the early, two piece ign of the 266......if it is located aft of the recoil cover screw it is the later one piece ign of the 268XP/272XP. The recoil mounting pattern remained the same on every model of this large saw family. This particular saw is the late version

Took a couple more pictures today, The tip cover shows a date of 87, which if I read correctly is when the 268xp was introduced?
