Yup a good chain is the biggest performance part you can add to you saws.
All chains are not for certain jobs though, if you know your gonna be stumping all day a good semi chisel or chipper chain in .404 is going to last ALOT longer then a square grind chisel chain.

Any dealer should be able to give a simple answer to the OP's question, but that answer will, or should always include the question "What are you going to use the saw for?" Realistically, if a person has to ask the question, then a 16" or 18" bar should be enough to handle anything they should be doing until they get more experience under their belt.
