I am looking to put a 12" bar on a newly purchased MS170. I have been doing a lot of reading and cant seem to come across any p/n's for the proper bars and chains that would go with this saw. I already plan on ordering the 1/4 sprocket 1123 640 2007. I would like to find the p/n for the narrower 12" roller nose bar and a good chain to match this bar and sprocket for carving. Also what file will I need. Any help would be great because I am new to the artform and dont want to waste money on any unnecessary pieces.

Thanks for this Stihl chart. Does it pay to change the sprocket to 1/4 for a 12" bar or will the stock 3/8 sprocket matched with a 12", 3/8P, .043, 44 rollomatic bar get me started? I am not looking to spend a ton of money off the bat and wont be doing any crazy detail oriented carvings. Any input is appreciated.

The pole saws that use the picco 1/4 set up would fit your 170. The 1/4 with 0.050 gauge as in 13rm and Oregon 25ap according to Stihl are different from the 71 class Stihl chain. Carving I suspect would be a hard nose bar with tiny nose and the 1/4 by 0.050. which chain is the sprocket part# you put for? From the above file 1123 640 2007 is the sprocket for 1/4 and 1123 640 2003 if for the 1/4P
