Why would it need to go all the way down to the case?

When the piston gets scored it sends metal through the bearings and seals, everything should be disassembled, cleaned and inspected to protect the new top end from premature failure.

This is the correct part number for green solenoid. The updated orange fuel filter is 0000 350 3522
