It will live, your question should be is the tree now a hazard? From the one picture that can't be determined. Best to get a qualified arborist to look at it.

You could clean it up with a saw. Unless your moving. I think it should be removed in the next 2 years. You got rot in the center. I see you have a wrap around deck and its a enjoyable focal point for you. But i think you have a hazard coming.
I have a old fashioned pear tree that center is 90% gone. But it produces alot of pears . that i give out and is not a danger to anything but a electric fence.

But what worries me is the thought of sticking a chainsaw into a limb that seems to be existing in multiple dimensions simultaneously.

Where do you see that? I was looking at the roof damage and the electrical wiring jerked off the house.
