Trying to help my dad find a replacement for his log splitter engine. He has a Huskee 650 series 22 ton splitter and the engine is held together by ratchet straps and bungees at the moment. Feels like you're going to tear it apart when starting, and won't start in cold weather. He's had it and has otherwise maintained it well for at least 10 years.

I read on another thread here about the Predator engines from HF being good replacements but I want to make sure I'm looking at the right thing. Looking for as close to a direct swap as possible.

Can you tell me if this is vertical or horizontal shaft? It looks vertical to me but all the replacements I see on HF's website are vertical so maybe I'm not understanding it right.

If it is a 6.5 hp replacement does the displacement matter? They have a 212cc engine but this one is 190cc. I can't see that being a big deal, but I'm certainly no expert here.

Anything else I need to look for or get with this?

The predictor motor they carry is a lawnmower replacement engine. It may work but you would have to do away with the flywheel brake. Don't know how the throttle control works, never really paid it any attention. I believe it's a 5hp motor and it a vertical shaft. I've read that folks say it has a lot of power for the size. They only carry two vertical shaft models and the other is a 20 hp or 22 hp I believe. The rest the carry are horizontal shaft motors. Horizontal is left to right straight across like the horizon. Vertical is up and down on the crankshaft.

I am needing to order some replacement parts for the same engine (650 series 190cc) on a 22 ton huskee splitter but I cannot find the model number anywhere on this engine. It only lists an engine family of 9bsxs.1901vh. No results when I search those numbers. Does anyone know what the model number would be?

You’ve got the same thing I do. And same problem. Key thing to find is a vertical shaft motor and the crank needs to be a 7/8” x 3-5/32” tapped.

Also note changing engine oil in the replacement B&S engine will be a problem. Drain plug on bottom not accessible once engine is mounted.
