Hi all.
Where Im at: I have a running ms170 but with broken brake, handle and throttle. I have a 017that was until this weekend fully functional.

What went wrong: used the wrong jerrycan to fill my 017 (yeah yeah... I know...) and the motor is damned well close to siezed.

What Im asking: can I do a straight motor swap? If not, why?

Thanks in advance

I'll say upfront that I have never done such a swap, since both motors are clam shells and would probably swap. Since you have both saws, tear them down and try it. the carbs and air boxes may be different, just swap the whole motor assembly. I have an 017 I bought in 1996 modified with a Walbro WT 215 carb, a bucking spike made for an MS 180, and 14" 3/8 Picco bar and chain. The MS170 sells for the same price today that it did when I bought mine- $189.
