Hi Guys,

I got given either a 034 or 036 from a from a friend a few days ago and I really would like to find out what the saw is without having to remove the cylinder.

I have checked the Stihl part numbers on the air cleaner and top cover plastics and they say either 034,036 and or possibly a Super. The alloy plate on top is completely bare so it makes it hard.

Is there anything I can check to work out which saw this is ?

Cheers

Justin

Well pulling the muffler isn't too bad , take a straw from a brake clean can or wd40 and insert it into the cylinder till it touches the back then rotate the piston up till it dents the straw ,reverse and withdraw the straw.
You can then measure the straw and get a fairly accurate bore measurement. Which will help narrow it down.

Where is the chain tensioner?

Remove the muffler cover. Stick a popsicle stick carefully through the bore. Bring the piston up and squeeze the stick. Measure the bore.

48mm=036 and 034S
46mm=034
This sounds like the only way to check it, but lets just say it has a 48mm piston, then how can we confirm if it's a 036 or a 034 Super ?

I think that the 034S had the older style tank and cover plastics. 036 was the newer plastics and covers. Post some photos of the saw... Assuming that it isn't a Frankensaw.

Both these 034 cylinders are the K&S type.
Note the vertical bulge in the 48mm Super cylinder (Red arrows ).

Note on the standard 034 cylinder below that the lowest cooling fin on the transfer port is more pronounced, (Green arrows).
Also lack of vertical bulge.

The exhaust port on the 034 Super & 036 appears to be slightly larger (1mm) than the 034, though don't take this as gospel.

The second cooling fin from the top on the 036 cylinder is larger.
This pic also shows a good comparison in the coloration between the darker 036 Mahle cylinder and lighter 034S K&S cylinder.
This difference is typical.

Bingo. The 034 standard cylinder doesn’t have any “S” on top, but it does not have the central machined area shown on the Super cylinder on the right above. The standard has the uvula in the intake port and the super doesnt. The elongated fin is 036, and the top cover will have a shorter front air dam on the 034 model.

Differences between the 034S and early 036 aren’t many. The super has a muffler with a hinged front and only 2 bolts going into the base. The 036 has 4 bolts in the front and no internal baffle. The 034S has a cheese grater front as well.

034’s came with Tilly or Zama carbs. 036 only came with Zama. 034S were also SN starting with 1 German saws. Most 036 (everyone I have seen) were SN 2 USA made saws.

034S vs 036 exhaust ports. The 034S looks like a crappy aftermarket exhaust, way too flat-except it’s perfect.

Hey guys,

Well I measured the piston and it is 48mm. The muffler is hinged with only 2 lower bolts and a cheese greater front as well. However I did not check the top of the cylinder, I will do that tomorrow.

So with everyone's help I think we have established that it I have a 034 Super. Now I am very happy. But I will get images tomorrow.
