I have 2 Stihl 034's that I'm putting together and need some suggestions on piston/cylinder matchup.

I have 2 good OEM cylinders and 1 good OEM piston. The 2 cylinders are both 034 46mm but 1 has open ports and the other closed. The 1 piston that I have has open windows through it.

I'm wondering what cylinder you'd recommend matching up the good piston with and what piston I should buy for the other cylinder. I found an old thread talking about windowed vs. non-windowed pistons but couldn't find any non-windowed ones in my searches. Also I assume the windowed piston would match best with the closed port cylinder and if I can find a non-windowed one that would go with the open port cylinder? How much does it matter? Am I overthinking it and should just order a meteor and put them both together?

Both are stamped 1125.
Here’s the closed port cylinder

Thank you Albert. I found this old thread talking about the difference. Based on that it sounds like an open piston can be used in either cylinder, that's all I'm seeing when I shop. So I think I'll match the used piston with the closed port cylinder as you suggested and order a meteor piston for the open port cylinder.

Open vs. Closed Port Cylinder

Neither of those cylinder should ever run a closed sided piston. Slab/windowless pistons are used in bottom fed transfer cylinders. Whether open or closed transfers won’t change that. If you use a windowless slug, you’ll occlude the lower transfers for most of the stroke and the engine won’t run right. You also won’t cool the piston.

Both need a windowed 46mm piston.

I have a few closed 46mm jugs here if anyone wants them.

You are right about that on a 034. On closer look from what I can remember, the older open port cylinders I have seen, had alittlte different looking windowed piston than the closed port types. I am thinking the pic posted above may be from the open port cylinder.
There are a few non bottom feed open port cylinders that do use a non windowed piston the husqvarna 268 non xp is one of them
