I have an 034S that engages the clutch at too low a speed. The saw had been abused and the clutch metal shows significant signs of heating. Because of this I am assuming that at least the springs are shot. I haven't pulled it off the saw yet to look for further damage. Am I likely to find any?

This is the clutch version before the anti-grenade washer was added. Based on several different IPLs there appears to be 2 different spring part numbers...

The Bryan or Stihl Northeast catalogs lists neither so I don't know which (if either) is still available.

Do any of you know the difference or which is intended for which clutch version? At first it would appear that the 0909 was good only on the non-grenade clutch. However, it appears that it is also used on MS290/390 with the grenade washer. So based on this it may be dependent on matching with a particular clutch shoe and not the carrier. Can anyone shed some light on this or have the Stihl Tech Note that explains the difference? All of this is early 90s so pre-MediaCat.

My 034 IPL only shows the 0000-997-0909 springs. For early clutch only the carrier and retainer are listed/different.1 034 clutch.png

The springs are listed on 2019 Bryan price list, $1.99.

Besides springs, check the holes in the carrier, if they are elongated springs won't help much

edit: I had 967 above too, as I copied and pasted from OP.

The # on the IPL page above is correct

my IPL agrees

0000 997 0909 is the correct # We sell them for $0.99 each every day lol
Well, my eyes aren't what they used to be... and then adding a dose of dyslexia only compounds the problem.

So it looks like the springs are still available. Further research seems to show that Stihl went to an 1128 series (044) clutch shoes and mating parts on the 036. I am wondering if it would be a good idea to upgrade to a beefier clutch. Anyone know if the 036 clutch will fit on an 034 Super? Assuming that the oil pump washer is added if needed.

Yep, it’ll fit fine. Add the washer as you mentioned above.
Thanks. I'll look for an upgrade/replacement.

It also looks like most sellers on Ebay don't know what they have when it comes to used clutches. Based on my research on multiple model IPLs it appears that Stihl uses mashup of clutch parts for different saws (including the cutoff saws). For the newer 036 clutch it uses the beefier 1128 shoes and springs but the 1125 carrier. Similar things happen with the 044 and 029/039 series yet the sellers think that these are somehow interchangeable.

In 1985 the idle speed was raised on the 034 to 2700 rpm. Therefore stiffer clutch springs were nessessary. Spring 0000 997 0907 was replaced by stiffer ones 0000 997 0909. This newer spring was/is white coded. In 1987 spring 0000 997 0909 was replaced by a spring with yellow marking. This yellow marked spring had a increased strengh. (same part no.) Idle speed 2700 rpm is recomended for these springs.

This bulletin?
Close! This seems to be some later change because a printed IPL that someone sent me a copy of dated 1994-02 (1993-06) shows a clutch with 1128 series shoes and a cover washer (1128-162-1000). Yet this note shows 1125 shoes. The light bulb came on!... Closer inspection of the 6/93 IPL shows two different clutches and not a new/old. It looks like the 1128 clutch went with the Super and the 1125 went with the regular 034.

Thanks so much for the background information! I found a date code of 1993 on the carb so am assuming that the saw dates from that time. The serial is 119946677x if that helps any.

So now we have another mystery. I went out to the garage and tore apart the clutch and cleaned everything up. The shoes are marked 1125/05a so this appears to be a regular 034 clutch on an 034 Super. So was the 1128 clutch added to the Super at a later date?

The plot thickens. Look at the 034 vs 036 vs the 046.

On the 036 vs 034 ( 1128 162 1000 1 3/4") there is a larger cover washer (1128 162 1001, 2 5/16") and different spring ( 0000 997 5815) same as the 046, as are the shoes (1128 162 0806)

Also 036 carrier is different part # 1125 162 3202 ( 034 carriers 1125 162 3201 early, 1127 162 3200 late) and uses 046 retainer 1128 162 3000

Yea, the cover washer appears to match/follow the clutch shoes. I have also noticed different sizes depending on when/where used.

Also 036 carrier is different part # 1125 162 3202 ( 034 carriers 1125 162 3201 early, 1127 162 3200 late) and uses 046 retainer 1128 162 3000
The carriers changed thicknesses due to the presence or absence of the cover washer which would give them different part numbers. The 1127 is the 029/039 series. Stihl may have moved to this as the 034 was ending production or they were consolidating separate parts/part numbers.

I`m not able to find a 1128 clutch for the 034 only 1125. I think that clutch is not original on that saw.

The 036 IPL lists 1128 clutch parts but not the carrier. The 034/036 share the same crankshaft so you should be able to swap parts as long as they work with the carrier used, and clear oil pump/clutch with proper washer. Seems to 3 carriers, early 1125 034, later 1127 034 , and 1125 036

Do you have large or small cover washer? Could be you have a 036 clutch carrier 1125 162 3202.

This would be a good thread to sort out and summarize which parts work with which carrier(s) and if oil pump(s) effects the compatible parts. I don't have the 034 parts to try a mix and match

Maybe @Harley has a service bulletin(s)?

This clutch has NO cover washer. It has the "ears" on the retainer clips. Unfortunately the "ears" are not shown on the IPL. This clutch apparently predates cover washers.

The only parts that I have is an apparent regular 034 clutch on an 034 Super.

I am pretty sure that this information goes back to the days before MediaCat. I don't know if @HarleyT has paper archives going back that far.

Well, the new springs arrived and I think that it may have helped somewhat. With the new springs the clutch will start to creep at about 32/3300 RPM.
