I have not had any luck yet, the universal coil does the same thing as the 314. I am going to recheck the .010” gap tonight and try again.

It sounds like your timing is off. I'll dig out that CDIC coil.

I have tried removing the key and changing the timing in either direction to no avail. Should I try a different flywheel, if so which one?

Did you move them a little or a lot.With no key fitted at some stage it will be timed right.
Look at my pics how much difference there is in the key locations (green dot) when both wheels have the magnets at the bottom.
J is the expert on this so I am sure he will chime in again on this and correct me if i am wrong

Oh that is way more than I was moving it. I was only moving it fractions of a degree in either direction. That may be my problem.
