So I recently bought a Stihl 084 for a decent price and have been doing some work to it. When I got the saw it it about ripped my arm off trying to start. I think the coil was going bad and timing started to advance? Or there was too much fuel in the cylinder. The time I did get it started it backfired out the carb. Compression seems decent at 140 psi. So I tore it all the way down to the crank case. This is what I have done so far :

new oem :
Carb kit
Inner/outer fuel line &connector
Impulse line
Fuel filter
Umbrella valve
Upper av mount (used)
Decompression valve
Ignition coil 660 unlimited conversion
Crank seals

I cleaned the cylinder and piston up and going to reuse the rings. I’m patiently waiting on crank seals to throw everything back together.

Keep in mind some 084 flywheels have 2 keyways depending in your ignition. I don't know details, other than I encountered this same kicking issue and tried the 2nd keyway. Nevertheless, these saws are known for being nasty starters.

Yeah I had a limited coil on it it was in the first keyway. From everything I read the second key way is unlimited…. So after I put the crank seals and I should be running the second keyway when I install the flywheel… I’ll try to get a picture when I get to the house.
I mean I never had a chainsaw seem to lock up and kick back on me like this one did it was crazy. It would always stop and kick back pretty bad when the starter rope was about halfway to 3/4 the way out. I didn’t want to start it after that so I just tore down haha

Unlimited coil is working good… no more biting back with new coil set up. Now I just need to find a 41” piece of wood
You bring back pleasant memories. I sold mine 10 years ago to an Aussie who needed it worse than I did. I took mine 14 years ago to a GTG with a 36" .404 bar on board and cut some big wood:

In the one-on-one competition, I finally lost to the winner who was running a modified Husky 394 with skip-tooth chain and airplane fuel mix. It was close, but he edged me out. Lots of fun.
