So I have a TB that the recoil went haywire on me. I bought a donor saw and threw on it's great working recoil. Now it doesn't suck all the way in, and the rope is fraying bad.
Are the pawls on the flywheel to blame? Are they worn and not letting the recoil... recoil?
Can I replace the spring and get it back to new? How hard are they to replace without it flinging itself across the room?

Remove the starter housing and try wrapping the cord one more turn around the drum assembly. That should allow the spring to pull the cord all the way back in so that the handle isn't flopping loose. You may have to shorten the rope about 4" instead. Spray some penetrating oil around the rope bushing. It could be stuck from age.
