Here's another tree that got uprooted. It's a double tree with that split and it started to rot at the top not sure how long it's been down. Can't find any buds everything like that is dry and dead on it.

Looks like shagbark hickory from here.
I'll say some type of elm.
Hickory, but not shagbark.

Nope. pretty sure it's hickory.
with all that poplar around it throughout the woods, maybe a cousin slipped in there?

Here is a new one I tackled today it seems very similar to the hickory but slight difference the bark is shaggy I can rip chips of it off easily. I put next to the other for comparison. I'm assuming is shagbark hickory but was more live with all the green new shoots coming out of it.

I'm switching to willow or cottonwood.
My first impression of the bark was Willow. IDK , he needs to tell more about the weight of the wood ,how it cuts etc.

The first wood I just split some of the top thinner pieces of the trunk and it feels like the wood slips right off it pretty easy to split and feels slick when splitting like it's peeling it
Does it smell like pee so to speak,is it light and easy to cut?
I'm looking at the very wide growth rings. I've cut shag hickory in the past and don't remember it that wide grained. Also, it seems strange a hardwood like hickory would rot at the base like that,
but, of course, I could be wrong.

It usually isn't possible to positively identify a tree just from the bark. Get some pics of the twigs, leaves (tough to do out of season), and the buds (particularly important when the leaves are gone). There are some plant taxonomists so good they can positively identify most any tree just from the buds on the twigs. I am not one of those people, however.

One thing I know for sure it's not Hickory. It's another soft Poplar type. Basswood maybe.
